Style Exploration

Artists whose styles I'm trying to experiment w/:

Ted Mathot
Lou Romano
Scott Morse
Walt Stanchfield
Mary Blair
(will add more later)

Ultimately, I'm trying to find ways to improve not only the overall appeal of my illustrations/sketches/etc., but also the efficiency of them. I want to be able tell a lot with as few extraneous lines, details, and visual distractions as possible. It's not just speed I'm going for, it's clarity, it's appeal, and it's believability. And if anything, to at least have fun leaving my comfort zone!

Here's an existing character I decided to practice on:

Character (c) Namco Bandai, MonolithSoft.

Her hair's beautiful, but I think the posture is pretty awkward. From the waist down is where I really start to notice it. There's a lot of crease on [her right] side at the hip and my eyes want to see it push through to the other side. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I'm thinking this: > > instead of this: > < (these representing her waist).

Try drawing a body or gesture of a body over her clothes and it might better point out where her lower torso needs adjustment--just paying attention to where her legs actually meet her knees and run up into the thighs.

This is why all superheros wear skin-tight costumes and I like drawing naked people a whole hell of a lot, hahaha. Clothes can convolute the shape of the body but rarely hide our inattention to it.

Hey Jake! Thank you -so- much for the thoughtful critique! I admit I did not put much thought into the folds, but rather stuck them in there as "detail". As you pointed out, folds are such a bitch to draw! (when drawing people on the bus now, 50% of my energy goes into figuring out the folds!)

Thanks again, and I'll definitely take your advice. :D
